In the journey of Holy Facade, I had to learn the hard way that 'religious' does not always mean 'safe'—and it certainly does not always mean true faith in God. For too long, I lived under a version of religion that was used to justify my silence, enable my religious abusers, and maintain a high-stakes performance of 'godliness.'

Fugelsang’s perspective was a vital lifeline for me. It helped me dismantle the legalistic, punitive version of God that was used to keep me in a cycle of shame and 'peace-keeping.' This book helped me realize that separating from a hateful or manipulative religious environment wasn't an act of rebellion—it was an act of spiritual survival. It gave me permission to seek a faith that is rooted in love and empathy, proving that you don't have to lose your soul to find your way out of the facade.
